Antje Majewski

The German artist Antje Majewski (*1968, Germany) adopts a collaborative, transdisciplinary approach to her work, inviting colleagues from different parts of the world to take part in a poetical debate on the continuous exchange between man and nature. For the Biennale Gherdëina 7, she realised a project entitled Sculpture Forest Sanctuary. Antje Majewski has asked her colleagues-artists (Paweł Althamer, Agnieszka Brzeżańska, Alioune Diouf, Cecilia Edefalk, Paweł Freisler and Gregor Prugger) to make available sculptures to be permanently positioned in this specially chosen part of the forest to conjure up the Sacred Forests of West Africa and Southern China, spiritual sites that celebrate the community of living beings and spirits. All the sculptures in this part of the forest are made with materials that may be found in the forest itself. They will thus decay in the course of time and become part of the environment, leaving the forest totally uncontaminated by any human presence. In this way, Majewski seeks to create a deeper link between the forest, with all its living creatures, and visitors, and to generate a special context with the positioning of the various works, allowing good intentions and special experiences to emerge. The Sculpture Forest Sanctuary thus becomes a small experimental workshop to study the adaptation of plants, insects, fungi, animals and microbes to climate change.
