Circolo del Suolo – A Tutto Bosco (a walk in the woods) is a project curated by Brave New Alps (Bianca Elzenbaumer, *1980, Italy and Fabio Franz, *1983 Germany) that took place on October 3 on the hill of Pilat.The Soil Club is a multifaceted space for dialogue and exploration, dedicated to the actors of eco-social change in the Alps who act, nonetheless, with a planetary consciousness. On the occasion of the Biennale Gherdëina, the Soil Club explores the world and the interdependencies that hold it together, taking the local forest as its starting point. On a Saturday morning, therefore, scientists, artists and educators gathered in the forests around St. Ulrich to discuss how our engagement for the forest and nature can guide our understanding of the world.
With contributions by historians, lawyers, scientists, urban planners, climate researchers, artists and politicians (including Annibale Salsa, Christian Hoffmann, Filippo Favilli, Andreas Hilpold, Julia Plungger, Juri Bottura und Manola Corrent, Herwig Prinoth, Sofia Set, Antje Majewski, Gregor Prugger and others), in collaboration with the EURAC Research Centre Bolzano (Institute of Federalism, Institute of Alpine Environment), the South-Tyrolean Museum of Natural Science, and in connection with the project Sculpture Forest Sanctuary by Antje Majewski the following subjects were put up for discussion: common/collective forest management, the forest as a legal entity, forest biodiversity, soil life, interdependence and the invisible aspects of ecological connections, the forest and climate degradation, energy sources and forests, forest management, wilderness education.
Brave New Alps is a collective for the investigation of communal goods that combines methods of design research with approaches of radical pedagogy, of conflict mediation and of DIY in order to include people in the discussion and a rethinking process in social, political and ecological questions. Alpine Community Economies is a research project initiated in 2019, in the context of Brave New Alps, as a collaboration between Bianca Elzenbaumer and Fabio Franz and sponsored by the European Union through a Marie-Slokodowska-Curie individual grant (in collaboration with EURAC Research). It experiments with communal goods and explores the legal and organisational framework that can support an eco-social design practice that wants to operate beyond the market, i.e. outside the conventional customer-designer framework.
