Giuseppe Penone
∗1947, Italy
lives and works in Paris, France and Turin, Italy
Penone produced Scrive, legge, ricorda (Writes, Reads, Remembers) at the start of his career in 1972, when he was concerned with elements such as woods and trees, on which he left his mark through performative actions. In this work he stuck an iron wedge bearing his seal and the date (1972) into a tree trunk. In doing so, he used an act of violence to introduce an artistic object into a natural context, thus branding the tree and leaving a trace of his own presence in nature. As it grew, the tree was to assimilate the foreign body in an action reiterating social and cultural questions. Photographs of the performance and the anvil are on show to the public at the Circolo artistico e culturale in Ortisei.
