Mariana Castillo Deball

∗1975, Mexico
lives and works in Berlin, Germany

Curvas Guerrero Picudo, the sculpture on show in the Circolo artistico e culturale for the Biennale Gherdëina VI, is part of a series entitled Who will measure the space, who will tell me the time?, first presented to the public at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Oaxaca, Mexico, in 2015. To create the series, the artist collaborated with traditional local potteries. The point of departure for the work were the archaeological figures in the Museo Rufino Tamayo, a museum of pre-Columbian art, also in Oaxaca. The artist combined the figures with contemporary forms taken from everyday objects such as cogwheels, nuts and toys. They are the inspiration for the artistic practice of Castillo Deball, which involves bringing together, haphazardly and ironically, carefully selected or randomly identified forms, then assembling them in thin, slender columns.
