Nicola Samorì’s sculpture On the Tentacle, conceived for Ortisei’s Sant Antonio Church and displayed in this center as a totemic statue, offers a journey through the labyrinths of a “vernacular state of mind”, insinuating a doubt upon the Catholic art’s ingenuous desire for eternity. A split monumental figure of a saint, executed in walnut wood, dramatizes the manifold relations between the individual and a community, the present and the future, the mundane and the ritual, generating a new intimacy for a complex world of ambiguities and suspended faith. A rapture evoking ecstasy, or a rupture, tearing the rough wooden body, exposing a wound and pain of separation?
