This forthcoming edition of Biennale Gherde\u0308ina represents a landmark moment in the event\u2019s history<\/strong>, as it proudly marks its tenth iteration<\/strong>. The 10th edition also heralds new major national and international collaborations across the biennale and beyond.<\/p>\n

Amid the Dolomites, Biennale Gherd\u00ebina 10: (Future) Paradise Gardens<\/em> invites us into terrains both tender and turbulent\u2014where gardens become symbols of survival, love, and the possibility of a just future.<\/p>\n

As the curator Samuel Leuenberger says:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Dolomites provide an inspiring backdrop, rich in natural beauty, artisanal traditions, and timeless mountain narratives \u2014 an ideal setting to explore the concept of <\/em>(Future) Paradise Gardens<\/em><\/strong>. These gardens, existing at the intersection of raw natural grandeur and human cultivation, are envisioned not only as sanctuaries for flora and fauna but also as spaces reflecting our collective aspirations for a future grounded in justice and equality. Here, gardens can nourish both body and spirit, serving as places of refuge, possibility, and renewal for all.<\/em><\/p>\n

The exhibition is structured into distinct chapters, each examining a different facet of the human-made construct we call the garden. Symbolically, metaphorically, and emotionally, the themes center around notions of \u201c<\/em>Commoning<\/em><\/strong>\u201d \u2014 where growing and sharing food, alongside caretaking and preserving traces of all life, are given priority. Another chapter, titled \u201c<\/em>Divine Love and Growth<\/em><\/strong>,\u201d invites contemplation of the garden as a symbol of spiritual flourishing and transcendence.<\/em><\/p>\n

The exhibition further delves into the concept of the \u201c<\/em>Violent Garden<\/em><\/strong>,\u201d addressing the urgent need to decolonize the garden \u2014 challenging anthropocentric views and creating space for animals and nature to move freely and reclaim agency. A chapter on \u201c<\/em>Queer Ecology<\/em><\/strong>\u201d also interrogates why nature is often perceived as inherently queer, expanding the conversation on diversity and fluidity within ecological systems. Additionally, the project explores the \u201c<\/em>Botanical<\/em><\/strong>\u201d\u2014 the ordering and classification of plant specimens \u2014 versus \u201c<\/em>Gardens as Spaces for Reflection and Poetry<\/em><\/strong>,\u201d where gardens transform into sites of introspection, beauty, and creative imagination\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

(Future) Paradise Gardens <\/em>ci invita ad attraversare paesaggi al tempo stesso delicati e movimentati, dove i giardini si fanno simbolo di sopravvivenza, di amore e della possibilita\u0300 di un futuro piu\u0300 giusto.<\/p>\r\n

Racconta Samuel Leuenberger<\/strong>:<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u201cLe Dolomiti offrono un contesto affascinante, ricco di bellezze naturali, tradizioni artigianali e racconti senza tempo delle montagne: un setting ideale per esplorare il concetto di <\/em>(Future) Paradise Gardens<\/em><\/strong>. Questi giardini, in bilico tra la grandezza selvaggia della natura e la cultura antropizzata, fungono non solo da santuari per flora e fauna, ma anche come spazi che rispecchiano le nostre aspirazioni collettive per un futuro basato sulla giustizia e l'uguaglianza. In questo ambiente, i giardini possono fornire nutrimento sia al corpo <\/em>\r\n\r\nche allo spirito, prestandosi quali luoghi di rifugio, possibilita\u0300 e rinnovamento, per tutte e tutti. <\/em>\r\n\r\nLa mostra si articola in capitoli distinti, ognuno dei quali esplora un diverso aspetto di quel costrutto umano che chiamiamo giardino. Simbolicamente, metaforicamente ed emotivamente, i temi ruotano attorno alle nozioni di \"<\/em>Commoning<\/em><\/strong>\" (Condivisione comune) \u2014 dove assumono un ruolo centrale la coltivazione e la condivisione del cibo, insieme alla cura e alla preservazione di cio\u0300 che rimane di ogni forma di vita. Un altro capitolo, intitolato \"<\/em>Divine Love and Growth\u201d <\/em><\/strong>(Amore divino e crescita), invita a riflettere sul giardino quale simbolo di fioritura spirituale e di trascendenza. <\/em>\r\n

La mostra approfondisce ulteriormente il concetto di \u201c<\/em>Violent Garden\u201d <\/em><\/strong>(Giardino violento), affrontando l'urgente necessita\u0300 di decolonizzare il giardino - mettendo in discussione la visione antropocentrica e liberando spazio affinche\u0301 animali e natura possano muoversi senza restrizioni, riconquistando la propria autonomia. Il capitolo dedicato alla \u201c<\/em>Queer Ecology<\/em><\/strong>\u201d (Ecologia queer) si interroga sul motivo per cui la natura viene spesso percepita come intrinsecamente queer, ampliando il discorso sulla diversita\u0300 e la fluidita\u0300 all'interno dei sistemi ecologici. Samuel Leuenberger <\/strong>sagt dazu:<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u201eDie Dolomiten bieten eine inspirierende Kulisse, reich an natu\u0308rlicher Scho\u0308nheit, handwerklichen Traditionen und zeitlosen Berggeschichten \u2013 ein idealer Ort, um das Konzept der <\/em>(Future) Paradise Gardens <\/em><\/strong>zu erkunden. Diese Ga\u0308rten existieren an der Schnittstelle zwischen natu\u0308rlicher, rauer Grandeur und menschlicher Pflege und sind nicht blo\u00df als Refugien fu\u0308r Flora und Fauna gedacht sondern auch als Ra\u0308ume, die unsere kollektiven Bestrebungen nach einer Zukunft basierend auf Gerechtigkeit und Gleichheit wiederspiegeln. Diese Ga\u0308rten hier ko\u0308nnen sowohl Ko\u0308rper als auch Geist na\u0308hren und dienen als Orte der Zuflucht, der Mo\u0308glichkeiten und der Erneuerung fu\u0308r alle. <\/em>\r\n

Die Ausstellung ist in diverse Kapitel unterteilt, die jeweils einen anderen Aspekt des vom Menschen konstruierten Konzepts von Garten erza\u0308hlen. Symbolisch, metaphorisch und emotional drehen sich die Themen um die Vorstellung des \u201e<\/em>Commoning<\/em><\/strong>\u201c - wobei der Anbau und das Teilen von Lebensmitteln, sowie die Pflege und Bewahrung aller Spuren von Leben im Vordergrund stehen. Ein weiteres Kapitel unter dem Titel \u201e<\/em>Divine Love and Growth\u201c <\/em><\/strong>(Go\u0308ttliche Liebe und Wachstum) la\u0308dt dazu ein den Garten als Symbol fu\u0308r spirituelles Wachstum und Transzendenz zu betrachten. <\/em><\/p>\r\n

Weiters befasst sich die Ausstellung mit dem Konzept des \u201e<\/em>Violent Garden<\/em><\/strong>\u201c (Gewaltta\u0308tigen Gartens) und thematisiert die dringende Notwendigkeit, den Garten zu dekolonisieren \u2013 indem anthropozentrische Sichtweisen in Frage gestellt und Raum fu\u0308r Tiere und Natur geschaffen wird, damit diese sich frei bewegen und ihre Handlungsfa\u0308higkeit zuru\u0308ckgewinnen ko\u0308nnen. Ein Kapitel u\u0308ber \u201e<\/em>Queer Ecology<\/em><\/strong>\u201c (Quere O\u0308kologie) hinterfragt auch, warum Natur oft als selbstversta\u0308ndlich queer wahrgenommen wird, und erweitert die Diskussion u\u0308ber Vielfalt und Fluidita\u0308t innerhalb o\u0308kologischer Systeme.
