Tobias Tavella

Tobias Tavella’s installations consist mainly of natural materials such as tree trunks, bones, leaves and branches which the artist retrieves from nature and combines with industrial materials and found objects, creating compositions that often extend to fill the display space. In his mobile installation Branches (2021), the artist suspended lichen-covered elm branches from the ceiling as if they were furniture. Connected to metal tubes by wires, the branches slowly rotated in irregular circles, triggered by the slight air movements caused by people as they approached the installation. Branches reflected on the passing of time through a dance between organic and artificial elements. In a partnership between BiennaleGherdëina and Museion – Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Bolzano, for The Parliament of MarmotsTobias Tavella created two modular installations consisting of an oversized drum, scaffolding and plant elements recovered from nature. Specifically, the artist recycled a number of satellite dishes of various sizes abandoned in the forest, giving these disused technical devices a new lease of life, transforming them into musical instruments that people can play. Like a nomadic object, the drum will travel during the Biennale Gherdëina to Juac, an idyllic location in the heart of the Dolomites World Heritage Site. Here, its installationwill serve as shelter and protection from the elements. In this resistant act of reinterpretation and redefinition, Tobias Tavella explores the new potential thatcan arise from the fusion of technological and natural objects, creating fascinating and poetic installations.
