A concert by the South Tyrolean percussion group conTakt, which will perform the monumental work Tutuguri VI (Kreuze) by the German composer Wolfgang Rihm (1952–2024), regarded as one of the most radical and physically intense works in contemporary music. Far beyond a composition for six percussionists, it unfolds as a ritual sound theatre in which music becomes a corporeal and psychological experience at the very limits of perception. This extraordinary masterpiece of the percussion repertoire has often been described as overwhelming, mesmerizing, and profoundly archaic in its expressive power.
The composition lasts approximately 35 minutes and is scored for six percussionists positioned throughout the performance space. Its instrumental forces consist almost exclusively of drums, tom-toms, congas, bass drum, wooden slit drums, cymbals, and tam-tams, while pitched percussion is almost entirely absent. The result is a musical world in which defined pitch recedes into the background, giving way to an overwhelming focus on rhythm, pulse, and physical energy.
